The guide
01
What are ChatGPT ads?
Ads appear below ChatGPT responses with an advertiser name, logo, headline, description, landing page and image. Delivery considers conversation context and other relevance signals.
Advertisers can provide context hints, but these are not exact-match search keywords and do not guarantee a placement in a particular conversation.
02
Can Australian businesses use Ads Manager?
OpenAI currently lists Australia as available for self-service Ads Manager. The legal entity advertising and being billed must be based in an eligible country. Account access and campaign eligibility should still be checked before committing spend.
Ads Manager is a beta product. It supports campaign creation, updates and reporting, with account controls for permissions and billing. Features can change, so confirm what is available in your account.
03
What does advertising cost?
OpenAI uses an auction, with impression and valid-click billing. The amount you pay depends on the campaign and auction; there is no guaranteed cost per lead or sale.
I would agree a test budget separately from any management fee. Do not treat a platform bid suggestion or another advertiser's result as a forecast for your business.
04
What should be ready before launch?
My starting point would be your offer, landing page and the action you want someone to take. Then check account access, campaign eligibility, assets, billing and measurement before agreeing a test.
- Define a useful enquiry or sale and what it is worth.
- Agree a budget, a review date and a reason to stop or change the test.
- Confirm who owns the account and who is responsible for creative, tracking and reporting.
05
How are conversions measured?
OpenAI supports conversion events through its Pixel, Conversions API or both. When both send the same conversion, event IDs help avoid counting it twice.
Platform and analytics totals can differ because of attribution windows, consent, browser conditions and configuration. Tracking should be tested before interpreting a conversion total as a business result.
06
What can you report?
Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC and CPM, and conversions when configured. Reporting has processing delays and recent totals can change.
For a proposed test, I would compare spend with qualified enquiries or sales and explain the attribution limits. A high click-through rate alone is not evidence that a campaign is profitable.
07
Should you test it?
I would start with the business case, not the novelty. A clear offer, measurable outcome and budget you can afford to test are more useful than claims about low competition or getting in first.
There is no promise here of cheap clicks, guaranteed rankings or better returns than Google or Meta. Whether the channel suits you is a question to investigate with your own data.
08
Discussing a brief with me
Tell me what you sell and what you want to achieve. I will confirm the support I can offer, account access and scope before quoting work. Campaign setup or management is conditional on that agreement.
